BIRDWATCHING IN TRIESTE
BEST SPOTS FOR NATURE LOVERS
Trieste might be known for its cafés and sea views, but the city also offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Between the protected coastline, karst cliffs, and wetlands just outside the center, you can spot migratory birds, seabirds, raptors, and colorful species throughout the year.
1. Val Rosandra Nature Reserve
A wild, rocky valley on the city’s edge, Val Rosandra is home to peregrine falcons, kestrels, hoopoes, and many woodland species. Bring binoculars: the cliffs are ideal nesting areas for birds of prey.
2. Miramare Marine Reserve
Around the Miramare Castle area, the protected marine ecosystem attracts gulls, cormorants, herons, and occasional rare visitors during migration. The promenade offers great viewing points without leaving the main path.

3. Foce dell’Isonzo (Isola della Cona)
A bit farther but worth the trip, this wetland reserve is one of Italy’s top birdwatching destinations. Flamingos, herons, oystercatchers, and hundreds of migratory species stop here throughout the year. Wooden hides allow for quiet, respectful observation.
4. Carso Plateau Trails
The karst landscape is perfect for spotting woodpeckers, warblers, and small birds of prey. The trails around Basovizza and Opicina often reward patient birdwatchers with surprising sightings.
