TO EXPLORE
Trieste is an excellent base for exploring some of the most beautiful and evocative castles in northeastern Italy. Whether perched on cliffs or tucked into leafy forests, these historic fortes offer scenic views, cultural depth, and memorable storytelling. Let’s uncover the castles you shouldn’t miss.
Miramare Castle
Towering beautifully over the Adriatic just north of Trieste, Miramar Castle was built in the mid-19th century for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria. Its stately white façade and botanical gardens (22 hectares!) designed by the archduke himself are a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Romantic styles. Inside, the rooms are preserved with original furnishings, from Maximilian’s naval-style bedroom to the ornate Throne Room. Perfect for lovers of architecture, history, and seaside vistas.

Duino Castle & the Rilke Path
About 15 km from the city, Duino Castle dominates a cliff overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. Founded in medieval times and expanded by the Thurn und Taxis princely family, it became a cultural retreat attracting Rainer Maria Rilke, Strauss, Liszt, and D’Annunzio. Inside, you’ll find Palladio’s spiral staircase and views that inspired Rilke’s Duino Elegies. After touring the castle, enjoy the Sentiero Rilke, a cliffside walk to Sistiana offering sea panoramas and pine-shaded paths.

Castello di San Giusto
Right in the heart of Trieste, San Giusto Castle sits atop the eponymous hill and offers a photogenic mix of Roman foundations, medieval walls, and baroque architecture. The castle museum includes ancient armory, a lapidarium with Roman stone relics, and wide ramparts offering sweeping views of the city and sea.
