DAY TRIP TO MUGGIA
A CHARMING FISHING VILLAGE NEAR TRIESTE
If you are looking for an easy escape from the bustle of Trieste, the small coastal town of Muggia makes for a perfect day trip. Just a short ferry ride or drive from the city, Muggia is the only Istrian town that still belongs to Italy, and it offers a unique mix of Venetian architecture, Adriatic charm, and relaxed seaside atmosphere.
1. A Venetian-Style Old Town
Wander through the narrow alleys of Muggia’s historic center, where pastel-colored houses, small squares, and arcaded buildings echo the look of nearby Istrian towns such as Piran or Rovinj. The main square, Piazza Marconi and the beautiful Duomo di San Giovanni e Paolo are a great starting point for your visit.
2. The Seafront and Marina
Stroll along the promenade and enjoy the view of fishing boats and sailing yachts in the harbor. Stop for a coffee or gelato at one of the cafés with outdoor seating and take in the slower pace of life compared to Trieste.
3. Muggia Castle and Views
For panoramic views of the coast, climb up to Muggia Castle, originally built in the Middle Ages and later renovated. From here you can admire the entire Gulf of Trieste, including the city skyline and, on clear days, even Slovenia’s coastline.
Tip: The entrance to the castle is allowed only on special occasions.

4. Food and Local Specialties
Muggia is well known for its seafood restaurants and trattorie. Try local dishes such as grilled fish, scampi alla busara, or Istrian-style pasta with seafood. If you visit in February, don’t miss the famous Muggia Carnival, one of the most traditional carnivals in the region.
How to get there
From Trieste, you can take a ferry that connects the two towns in about 30 minutes, offering scenic views along the way. Alternatively, buses and cars make the short trip even quicker.
