THE BARCOLANA REGATTA
TRIESTE'S BIGGEST SAILING EVENT
Every October, the sparkling Gulf of Trieste becomes a playground for sailors from around the world. The Barcolana Regatta is the largest participatory sailboat race globally, and a joyous celebration of maritime tradition, enthusiasm, and that deep Triestine connection to the sea.
The Barcolana: what it is and what to do
Since its inception in 1969, the Barcolana has grown from a local regatta to a massive event. With 2,000+ boats ranging from national champions to hobbyists, the annual race transforms the Gulf into a sea of colorful sails on the second Sunday in October.
Other events
• Barcolana Young: junior sailors run their own race
• Barcolana Classic: a race for vintage and classic boats
• Barcolana Village: a "village" of stands on the seaside, with food and wine stands, sponsors-dedicated areas and exhibitions of technical equipment
Best Vantage Points
• Piazza Unità d’Italia: lined with stands, food kiosks, and packed terraces
