Saint Spyridon Serbian Orthodox Church
With its pale blue domes rising above the waterfront, Saint Spyridon is one of Trieste’s most recognizable landmarks. Inside, golden icons, mosaics, and richly decorated altars create an atmosphere of deep spirituality. Even if you’ve never visited an Orthodox church, this one feels warm and welcoming.
San Nicolò dei Greci
This small Greek Orthodox church, overlooking the sea, offers delicate icons and a serene atmosphere. It’s a testament to Trieste’s cosmopolitan past and the strong presence of Greek merchants in the city.
Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo
Located at the end of the Canal Grande, this Neoclassical church looks almost like a Roman temple. Its white columns reflect beautifully in the water, especially at sunset. The interior is understated, but the position makes it one of the most photographed buildings in the city.

San Giusto Cathedral
Perched on the hill overlooking the city, San Giusto blends basilica, Roman ruins, and medieval art. The mosaics inside shimmer in low light, and the peaceful courtyard is a lovely spot to catch your breath.
The viewpoint outside the church is also one of Trieste’s best.

Santa Maria Maggiore
A Baroque gem just below the San Giusto hill, Santa Maria Maggiore is the backdrop of Trieste’s famous Festa della Madonna. The façade may seem simple, but inside you’ll find ornate altars, sculptures, and an elegant balance of marble and soft colors.
From hilltop cathedrals to seaside domes, Trieste’s churches reveal the spirit of a border city shaped by many cultures. Take your time visiting them: you’ll find art, silence, and some of the city’s most beautiful stories waiting behind their doors.
